New data has revealed that the average person in the UK takes 5,444 steps a day – amounting to an impressive total of nearly 2 million steps a year. Yet despite this figure, Brits remain only the sixth most active population in Europe, according to a new analysis by active foot care specialists, The Feets.
The study shows that step counting has become something of a national obsession, thanks in large part to smartwatches, smartphones and fitness apps that make it easier than ever to monitor our movements. As a result, step count has become a popular – and practical – measure of how much exercise we’re getting each day.
However, the commonly cited goal of 10,000 steps per day remains out of reach for most. Data from the OECD reveals that, on average, Brits are achieving just over half of that target, with daily step counts coming in at 5,444. Still, over the course of a year, that adds up to a significant 1.99 million steps – roughly the distance from London to Edinburgh and back, with a few miles to spare.
The Feets’ analysis places the UK sixth among all European countries. Leading the rankings is Spain, where people average 5,936 steps daily. Following closely behind are Sweden (5,863), Latvia (5,553), the Czech Republic (5,508), and Lithuania (5,498).
The data also reveals a notable gender gap in the UK’s step statistics. While men average 5,982 steps per day, women log just 4,908 – a difference of 1,074 steps, meaning men take around 20% more steps each day than women.
Logan Estop-Hall, Founder of The Feets, commented on the findings:
“The UK might not top the European table when it comes to daily steps, but you don’t need to be hitting 10,000 to put serious pressure on your feet. Just going about your day still means you’re covering huge distances – nearly 2 million steps annually!
Cracked heels, soreness or athlete’s foot aren’t just issues for runners – they affect everyday people in every type of role. That’s why foot care should be a priority for everyone. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or just chasing the bus, looking after your feet means you can keep moving in comfort and confidence.
The takeaway here? Don’t underestimate your mileage – and take care of your feet, even if you’re not hitting that 10K mark every day.”
