One of the aims of the Weymouth BID business plan is to attract more visitors to the town out of season and one of the best ways to do this is by hosting great events. In 2013 Weymouth BID commissioned Roger Dalton Associates to deliver two events each year, the Victorian Shownight in December and Waterfest in September.
This festival provides a platform for local businesses to showcase their products and services and a fantastic opportunity for visitors to see what Weymouth has to offer. Waterfest will be held on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September 2014. Saturday 11am – 6pm and Sunday 11am – 5pm
Businesses have really supported the event, with the Weymouth BID as main sponsor, Weymouth Sealife as Headline Sponsor and DreamCottages as a category sponsor.
Tamsin Mutton-McKnight, General Manager, Weymouth SEA LIFE Adventure Park and Tower said “Weymouth SEA LIFE Adventure Park and Tower are delighted to support Waterfest as Headline sponsor. Waterfest is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Weymouth’s maritime heritage and the importance of our coastline. We feel that this event is a great match for both our attractions; with the unparalleled views of the harbour and coast available from the Weymouth Tower and the unique insight into the amazing creatures that inhabit our seas provided by Weymouth SEA LIFE Adventure Park. We hope our involvement will provide additional opportunities to explore how we can all work together to preserve and protect these exceptional habitats for generations to come. “
Joy Sangster, Sales & Marketing Director, Dream Cottages, said “ Dream Cottages are really pleased to be involved as a Category sponsor of the newly launched Waterfest Festival. Over the last few years events in Weymouth have gone from strength to strength and with the same team working on Waterfest and acclaimed The Seafood Festival we feel sure it will be a great event that grows every year. Weymouth has so much to offer visitors. “
The main festival site is set around Weymouth’s historic old harbour where the quayside will be divided up into specialist areas focussing on sailing, diving, underwater exploration and traditional maritime crafts from boat building to lobster pot making. This will be complemented by a wide range of food, shanty music and a rolling programme of entertainment both onshore and afloat.
Alistair Clarke, Joint Chair of the Weymouth BID said “Waterfest Weymouth is a fantastic new BID Event to celebrate Weymouth’s great maritime heritage. The Weymouth BID is here to bring more visitors to Weymouth out of the main season and events like this will really help achieve this.”
Roger Dalton, Event Organiser said “Waterfest will have something for everyone from the prestigious tall ship, Le Marite to the famous Gipsy Moth IV that circumnavigated the globe in 1966/67 and the P2000 Navy Training Vessels . Demonstrations will include amazing “James Bond” style flyboarding displays to gig races and Sea Cadet displays right through to the traditional crafts of boat building, lobster pot making and knot tying. This is a great opportunity for marine based businesses to get involved and show off their products to visitors”.
