Can We Have a Celebrity to get Key Workers a Jab Priority Please?

Radio 2 presenter Jo Whiley has successfully got people with learning difficulties up the queue to get a vaccination. Though I don’t doubt the necessity for many of them, there are others who need celebrity support to get prioritised for a jab.

I’m Getting the Jab

I have a longterm mental health condition and mild autism. When I heard yesterday I qualified as a vulnerable adult for the COVID-19 vaccination I had a burst of relief. Yes – I get to be a little safer from getting this awful disease. But then I spoke to a few people. Two got me thinking:

The first is a 17 year old student who has Kawasaki Disease. This is peculiar to SE Asia but can involve a high temperature and other symptoms that wouldn’t sit well with COVID. She wasn’t classed as being vulnerable enough.

The biggie for me though is an Asda worker who has Type 1 diabetes. He didn’t qualify despite firstly some of his friends qualifying and perhaps more importantly, his job wading through the atmosphere of a store where anyone is allowed to breathe their fumes on him.

I live in relative isolation (that is hard going at times with my tormented mind) and work from home as I have for 15 years. There are millions of others who should be in the queue in front of me yet it strikes me that no one of prominence is genuinely on their side.

Where are the Celebrity Key Workers?

Let’s be honest – there is no political opposition interested in the welfare of the underdog in Parliament. Keir Starmer has no other interest than eradicating socialism from the Labour Party. That means the Tinpot Trump in Downing Street only listens to celebrities like the footballer Marcus Rashford  over kids’ free school meals and now Jo Whiley, the BBC Radio 2 presenter speaking up for people (like me) with learning difficulties.

The Blond Guy (as my astute 5 year old daughter calls him, different to the Orange Man in America) dismisses anyone to the left of Thatcher as being a Trades Union Lefty. Being a ‘populist’ he listens to celebrities as the Daily Mail promotes them for now.

We need a few celebrities to get out there now:

    • There are a couple of comedians who were teachers haven’t opened their mouths about supporting teachers.

Romesh Ranganathan is conspicuously quiet about his old profession. When schools open they’re going to be right on the frontline of the pandemic.

But what about shop assistants? There’s rather wet regulation on masks and PPE for people both working in and shopping in the supermarkets and warehouses that have kept us in food and gadgets throughout the last 12 months. Health and Safety regulation isn’t exactly hard-hitting either – according to Safety & Health Practitioner.

However, “The data suggests that, sadly, almost 8,000 workers have died where it is believed that the cause was directly due to COVID. Workers whose jobs involve regular exposure to COVID-19 or working near others, continue to have higher COVID-19 death rates

The British Safety Council points to the fact that the HSE has not brought a single prosecution against an employer for breaking COVID-19 rules, even though people clearly mix in workplaces, which increases the potential to catch and transmit the virus.”

There are a few celebrity builders out there who are conspicuously quiet too. Anyone head from DIY The Big Build characters? They’re supposed proud tradesmen!

Or…

Without doubt we are being mismanaged to a disgusting degree. Tens of thousands of people are dead who might be alive but for the lack of leadership in government. Many more tens of thousands wouldn’t be mourning loved ones or helping them deal with disability.

We lack political opposition.

What could be done to improve this? How about a Zero COVID policy that has been successful in so many other nations?

I am however just a thick nutter so perhaps should better keep my nose out of things. What do I know? Though I think Mr Hancock’s name should have a d in the middle as that signifies what he really should be doing instead of killing people by mismanagement I can only for now suggest that more celebrities get in the mix to support those who need them. I for one would gladly stand aside for 400,000 teachers to go in front of me and another half a million grocery store workers. But there again I’m just a socialist thick nutter….
