Chris Williamson, the former Labour MP for Derby North, has today revealed that he is in discussions with key labour movement officials and existing left-wing parties about creating a new socialist party.
Despite resigning from the Labour Party over a year ago, the former MP has until now rejected calls to establish a new party.
However, Keir Starmer’s response following the recent publication of the Equality and Human Rights Commission report into Labour’s handling of anti-Semitism, and Jeremy Corbyn’s subsequent suspension, has “shifted the landscape” according to Mr Williamson.
When speaking about his decision to begin forming a new party, Mr Williamson said:
“The Labour Party is dead. Any previous hopes that Labour would transform Britain’s political settlement and be a beacon to the world have been destroyed.
“Keir Starmer is overseeing a ruthless, anti-socialist regime, which is more focussed on driving out Labour’s left-wing members than on winning office in four years’ time.
“It’s time for socialists, anti-imperialists, and trade unionists to come together to create a new political vehicle to unite the British working class behind an ambitious programme of change.
“People are no longer interested in tinkering around the edges. We’ve reached a point where the entire system must be overthrown, and that’s what a new party needs to be committed to achieving.
“We’ll be working to build bridges and to create alliances. We know that competing in a two-party system has limitations. So, strategy and discipline will be our watchwords.”
