An amber warning for wind has been issued for the South of England as Storm Darragh is set to arrive on Friday, bringing with it “very strong winds and heavy rain” over the weekend. Forecasters predict gusts of up to 80mph around coastal areas late on Friday and into Saturday, with inland gusts reaching 60 to 70mph.
The amber warning for “potentially damaging” winds will be in effect from 3am to 9pm on Saturday. It covers coastal areas in the South of England, particularly Cornwall, Devon and Dorset, with risks extending into parts of the South East.
Storm Darragh is expected to pose risks including power outages, damage to buildings, travel disruptions, and injuries from large waves. Residents in the affected areas are advised to prepare for hazardous conditions and follow safety guidance.
Flooding Risk on Thursday
Yellow weather warnings for rain and wind are also in place for the South of England from Thursday to Sunday. On Thursday afternoon, heavy rain is forecasted between 2pm and 6pm, with 20 to 30mm (0.78-1.18in) of rain likely to fall in just a few hours.
These warnings include parts of the South West and areas extending into the South East. Surface water and potential flooding may lead to travel disruptions, compounded by gusty winds.
A separate yellow warning for strong winds is in place from 3pm on Thursday to 3am on Friday. Gusts of 60 to 70mph are expected along exposed coasts, particularly through the English Channel. This warning covers a large area, including Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, and parts of Hampshire.
Amber Wind Warning for Saturday
Storm Darragh will intensify on Friday evening, bringing heavy rain and strong winds into Saturday morning. The amber warning for damaging winds across coastal areas in the South will take effect from 3 am to 9 pm on Saturday.
Sky News weather producer Chris England said, “The winds will be strongest in the West at first, transferring eastwards later, with 80mph gusts likely on the coasts and 70mph gusts possible inland.”
The Met Office advises residents to “take action to protect yourself and your property” during amber warnings, which signal more widespread and likely disruption. Local authorities in the South of England are urging residents to secure outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm conditions.
Rain and Wind Warnings Continue
Additional yellow warnings related to Storm Darragh cover rain and wind from Friday afternoon to midday on Saturday. Affected areas include Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, and parts of the South East. Rainfall is expected to range between 20 and 30mm, with up to 60mm (2.36in) on higher ground, increasing the risk of flooding and travel issues.
A further yellow wind warning applies across the South of England from 3pm on Friday to 6am on Sunday. Inland gusts may reach 40mph, with coastal areas experiencing gusts as high as 80mph.
Advice for Drivers

He also recommended vehicle checks, including tyres, coolant, and oil levels, before setting out to reduce the risk of breakdowns. Residents and travellers in the South are encouraged to stay updated with the latest forecasts and warnings to ensure their safety during Storm Darragh.
