CORNISH BAKERY WEST BAY REVEALS STRIKING NEW LOOK FOLLOWING MAJOR REFURBISHMENT

Cornish Bakery, the independent, founder-driven company that first started in Mevagissey, last week unveiled its refurbished and restyled West Bay bakery. Located on West Bay Road, the bakery reopened on Saturday, 24th January 2026, with the help of the mayor of Bridport, Councillor Anne Rickard and honoured guest and regular customer, Phillip Sutton. The new bakery features a bold, contemporary new interior.

Cornish Bakery has long been part of the fabric of West Bay, serving both the local community and the town’s many visitors year-round. From hosting Macmillan Coffee Mornings to celebrating life’s milestones, the team regularly brings people together, most recently helping two long-standing customers mark their 60th wedding anniversary by inviting fellow regulars in for an evening of food, drink and celebration. The bakery is also a favourite stop for the Bluetits, West Bay’s local wild swimming group, who gather for warming coffees and pastries after their year-round sea swims.

West Bay was also the first Cornish Bakery location to partner with a food waste organisation, working closely with Cupboard Love in Bridport to ensure surplus food supports the local community. This commitment reflects the bakery’s wider ethos of responsible business and genuine local connection.

This stylish refurbishment represents a significant investment in the location, creating a more spacious and design-led bakery experience. Seating capacity has been increased from 34 to 42, allowing more visitors to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere, innovative products and speciality coffee.

Large bakery windows and a new marble counter and feature display bring Cornish Bakery’s product range to the forefront. Inside, the space features a carefully curated palette of natural, premium materials. A new tiled floor from Mandarin Stone sits alongside premium oak timber flooring from Havwoods.

Given the company’s birthplace in Mevagissey in Cornwall, they are always keen to showcase the talents, products and artworks of Cornish makers. The West Bay bakery is adorned with bespoke feature lighting by Cornish Studio Haran, alongside original artwork by Cornwall-based designers, A-Side. Additionally, the Cornish Bakery team has worked with Cornwall-based Clayworks, a pioneering company with a vision to use natural materials, particularly earth, to create architectural finishes that are beautiful, environmentally responsible, and enhance the wellbeing of those who use the spaces.

The newly designed interior places even greater emphasis on Cornish Bakery’s much-loved range of award-winning pasties, pastries and cakes, with a feature bakery window display that allows customers to see the full breadth of what’s baked fresh each day.

The reopening also marks an exciting new chapter for Cornish Bakery’s coffee offering, given its recent major new partnership with fellow Cornish success story, Origin Coffee, Europe’s leading specialty coffee roaster. This collaboration brings ethically sourced, expertly roasted coffee to West Bay, as well as to all the other 72 UK-based Cornish Bakery bakeries.

Manager of Cornish Bakery West Bay, Damian Barnard said, “West Bay isn’t just where we work, it’s our community. We see the same faces regularly, whether it’s swimmers coming in to warm up after their sea swim, locals meeting friends, or customers celebrating special moments in their lives. This refurbishment gives us a beautiful new space to continue doing what we love, looking after people and being part of this town and community.”

The newly refurbished bakery has a host of community-focused events planned in 2026 including a ‘funky socks fundraising day’ for Mencap on March 21st (World Down Syndrome Day) and fundraising for the Jurassic Coast Ultra Challenge across 16th – 17th May to raise money for Weldmar Hospice Care.

Cornish Bakery’s managing director, Mat Finch, said, “West Bay is one of the most beautiful coastal destinations in the UK, and we feel incredibly privileged to have a bakery here. Our brand and offering have both evolved greatly in recent years, particularly our coffee, which has become one of our biggest sellers, so we naturally felt that it was time for our space to evolve too.”

Mat continued, “This refurbishment gives us a brighter, more spacious and welcoming bakery where people can really enjoy great food, great coffee and time together. We’re proud to be investing in this fantastic location and we can’t wait to welcome locals and visitors back into our striking new West Bay bakery.”

Cornish Bakery, West Bay will continue to serve its full range of award-winning Cornish pasties, artisan sausage rolls, freshly baked cakes, scones and viennoiseries, alongside Origin’s specialty coffee, expertly prepared on a La Marzocco espresso machine for the perfect balance of quality and speed. The bakery is now open seven days a week from 8am – 5pm.
