Work on the cycleway scheme is currently focussed at the Waitrose junction and there is a controlled crossing point near the junction to help residents across the busy Le Neubourg Way.
However, construction workers on site have seen many residents choosing to cross by themselves but ending up in the live works area.
Cllr Ray Bryan, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Travel and Environment, said: “We have high standards of site safety and this includes ensuring the works area is clearly signed and barriered off to prevent pedestrians from accessing the live construction site.
“We appreciate the crossing has been 100m or so further to walk than usual, but it will soon be moving to the site of the permanent crossing – between Church View and the Waitrose junction. Please make every effort to use the safe crossing facilities provided.”
Work is continuing on the southbound side of Le Neubourg Way, Gillingham, to build the cycleway from Wyke Street to Station Road, this will also include narrowing the access into Waitrose to make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to cross at the new junction.
The current three-way temporary signals with controlled pedestrian crossings will remain in place until the early autumn, when the Waitrose Junction signals are commissioned and Le Neubourg Way is resurfaced from Newbury to Wyke Street, line markings will also be completed at this time.
These sustainable transport works will be followed with improvement works on Newbury Roundabout, Station Road and the New Road junction.
Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership has secured £3.18m through the Government’s Growth Deal to deliver a transport improvement package for the town.
