Weymouth & Portland Borough Council and West Dorset District Council are supporting The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal and recognising the 100th Anniversary of WW1.
Residents and visitors can pick up a poppy from both the district council offices at South Walks House in Dorchester and the borough council’s offices at North Quay in Weymouth for a small donation.
Both councils will also be flying their flags over the weekend to commemorate Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.
West Dorset District Council Chairman Gillian Summers will be attending Dorset County Council’s Remembrance Service on Tuesday 11 November and will lay a wreath on the memorial outside County Hall in Dorchester.
The Annual Service of Remembrance and two minutes silence in Weymouth will be attended by the Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Cllr Kate Wheller on Sunday 9 November at 11am on Weymouth Seafront.
This year the service will be joined by 120 Officers and personnel from visiting Royal Navy Ship HMS Portland led by Capt. S Asquith.
Following the service Cllr Wheller will lay the council wreath on the war memorial. Wreaths will be laid by the services, ex-service associations and local organisations. Members of the public are invited to lay private wreaths following the local organisations.
After singing the national anthem the contingents on parade will march past the war memorial. The ex-service organisations will continue to the American War Memorial where the Mayor will lay a wreath on behalf of the borough followed by a US Army veteran (Lynwood Newman) and members of the public.
For this service William Street to King Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from 10.00am until noon approximately. There will also be traffic diversions in place from noon until approximately 12.30pm on the Esplanade between King Street and theKings Statue for the US Memorial Wreath Laying Ceremony.
Cllr Wheller will also attend the Royal British LegionRemembrance Service at the war memorial on the Esplanade on Tuesday 11 November at 10:55am.
