D-DAY THEME FOR LOUVIERS TWINNING VISIT

The delegation from Weymouth’s twin town of Louviers, expected to be headed by Mayor Franck Martin, will be welcomed at a D-Day anniversary evening planned for the Ocean Room. The twinning dinneron Saturday 7 June, falls the evening after The Queen and the Prince of Wales attend the 70th. anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. The Ocean Room will be decorated specially and the Highcliff Charity Players will perform the music and songs of the 1940s.

As President of the Weymouth & Portland- Louviers Society, Coun. Ray Banham, Mayor of Weymouth & Portland chaired the annual meeting. “The twinning is excellent at creating good relationships,” comments the Mayor, “the friendship with Louviers has been successful for over 50 years. The link is of economic value to Weymouth & Portland, as the Louviers members bring business to the town. The twinning is good for the borough, extending hands of friendship across the English Channel.”

Chairman Cath Irving thanked the Mayor and Mayoress Coun. Pam Nixon for their infallible support to the Society and said how well they had represented the borough during the civic visit to Louviers in September. Cath Irving said the delegation from Louviers had enjoyed their trip to Weymouth in May with a good programme of events, culminating in the twinning dinner- although “the poor meal at the Prince Regent Hotel spoiled a nice evening.”

All Officers were re-elected: Cath Irving [Chairman,] Geoff McDonnell [Vice Chairman,] Pam Nicklin [General Secretary,] Tom Martindill [Treasurer,] Alan Roberts [Minutes Secretary,] Ann Rendall [Welfare Secretary,] Janette Martindill [Accommodation & Social Secretary,] Michel Hooper-Immins [Public Relations Officer] and Ted Nicklin [Membership Secretary.] Four further members were elected to the committee- Lynn Beecroft, Richard Prior, Alderman Peter Rendall and Mary Stone.
