Dorset County Hospital’s Emergency Department is the best A&E in the country according to the results of a national patient survey.

The Dorchester hospital has achieved the top score in the Care Quality Commission’s latest national Accident and Emergency survey.

Twelve hospital trusts achieved ‘better than expected’ results for seven or more (20 per cent) of the 35 questions in the survey with a score. Dorset County Hospital has the highest number of ‘better than expected’ results of all trusts with 69% (24 questions) of question scores ‘better than expected’.

Chief Executive of Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Patricia Miller said: “We are absolutely delighted with the results of this survey. It’s another piece of evidence which shows what wonderful, committed staff we have here at Dorset County Hospital.

“Well done to our Emergency Department team. They work extremely hard and do an amazing job every day, meeting and exceeding the expectations of our patients.”

The national survey involved 142 acute and specialist NHS trusts with a major accident and emergency department. Responses were received from nearly 40,000 patients, an overall response rate of 34%. 338 patients responded to the Dorset County Hospital survey, a response rate of 41 per cent.

The A&E survey is part of a wider programme of NHS patient surveys which cover a range of services. The full results are available on the CQC’s website at: https://www.cqc.org.uk/content/accident-and-emergency-survey-2014
