“If we’re forbidden from looking history in the eye during this horrific war, we’re doomed to repeat it.”
It has been more than 100 days since the ongoing genocide in Gaza continued to question the humanity of the world and fumes forward with equal animosity amid global outcry and protest.
More than 25,000 Palestinians have died, with over 65,000 wounded and over 2.3 million people displaced in hellfire, and the world simply watches the atrocities committed by the Western stronghold in disbelief, eyes closed and hands tied behind their backs.
The global humanitarian crisis persists, and the erosion of Western influence has reached its peak. At this stage, it would not be wrong to say that the international community and institutions have miserably failed, and the broken crevices that emerged in the new geopolitical order this past decade have become as clear as day.
And if any institution can be directly blamed for these piles of failures accumulated over the years, it is undoubtedly the United Nations.
Why has the United Nations failed?
Since its inception, the founding mission of the UN has been to galvanize the world to stop conflicts of all shapes and sizes and, most specifically, to immediately intervene and stop an event like the Holocaust from repeating.
On December 9, 1948, the world unilaterally adopted the first ever international law: the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, or simply the Genocide Convention, where the world in unison promised, “Never again.”.
Ironically, from Rwanda and Srebrenica to Yemen, Kashmir, and Palestine, the organization has repeatedly failed to uphold international law and resolve any major conflict.
History has repeated itself time and again, and the organization has been blatantly ignored. The recent flurry of attacks by Israel on the UN and most specifically on António Guterres, only adds fuel to the fire.
Ukraine burns, the Middle East grieves, and the long tail of Palestinian suffering continues while the plea of the General Assembly demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza falls on deaf ears.
Who is to blame?
Israel for years of persecution of the Palestinian people. The rest of the world for their silence. Lastly, and most importantly, the Muslim world for their gutless attitude.
There is no denying the facts. Hamas attacks have been few and far between, and there is no logic besides unequivocal condemnation for all of them. But what Israel has been doing is nothing short of a genocide of the highest order. Every person in their right mind is condemning the brutal acts of massacre and war crimes committed by the Israelites.
History will remember the relentless carnage, devastation, and persecution of Palestinian peoples at the hands of Israel. It will remember the self-subservient attitudes of the Western world. Above all, it will remember the lack of unity in the Muslim world to combat challenges as a united front.
Final Thoughts:
The latest ICJ Judgement is a positive move but will yield no results from a non-compliant and defiant Israel. The only solution is the universal condemnation of its acts by all nations to forge the way for peace. This can be achieved if every nation vows to recognize the sovereignty of Israel in exchange for an immediate ceasefire agreement.
It has to be recognised that peace in the Middle East can only be achieved if Israel and its demarcated territorial boundaries are acknowledged by all parties. Only then will a peaceful settlement for Palestine be achieved.
