Students from Dorset schools and colleges led a march in Dorchester on Saturday to oppose racism and discrimination.
Despite torrential rain, students and their supporters from Stand Up To Racism and local trade unions marched in the town centre to oppose the divisive politics of the Far Right.
Organised by students in Dorchester and Weymouth, the demonstration declared: “We are the future” and “We will not be silenced”.
Evelyn from Dorchester said: “It’s time for young people to stand up and say that our communities will not be divided by racism and hate. We stand for unity and hope – and against the dangerous policies of the Far Right.”
Beccy Brookman is secretary of Dorset Unison, the trade union with thousands of members in the county. She told the demonstration: “We applaud the stand taken by our young people. Unison has a strong policy against racism and for diversity and tolerance. Our workplaces, schools and colleges can never flourish when racism divides us.”
Student Isabella said: “We want to ensure that Dorchester, Weymouth, Portland and our other communities don’t fall for the racism promoted by the Far Right. Young people are the future, and we have a responsibility to make our voices heard.”
