DORCHESTER CRIME CRACKDOWN: Police Catch Offenders in the Act

Dorchester police have stepped up patrols across the town and surrounding villages in a busy week that saw a wanted person arrested, suspected shoplifters caught in the act, anti-social behaviour targeted and road offences brought before the courts.

The latest update from the Dorchester Neighbourhood Policing Team reveals the sheer range of incidents being dealt with by officers on the ground, from serious accidents and missing people to theft, anti-social behaviour, dangerous driving and a reported fire-starting incident.

Neighbourhood officers began the week assisting their colleagues from the Assisted Response Team at a variety of emergency calls.

In one particularly serious incident, officers provided life-saving first aid to a man following a serious accident.

A missing person was also located by officers while they were conducting a foot patrol, while another operation resulted in the arrest of a person who was already being circulated as wanted.

Police also carried out six stop-and-searches involving individuals, alongside a further search of a vehicle.

But it was the fight against anti-social behaviour and crime in the community that accounted for a significant proportion of the team’s activity.

Officers completed 10 home visits as part of their response to ASB, serving warning letters on young people who had recently been identified in connection with anti-social behaviour.

The town centre also came under particular scrutiny.

Plain-clothed officers conducted targeted foot patrols specifically aimed at tackling shoplifting. During one operation, officers witnessed a man stealing items from a shop. A community resolution was subsequently issued.

In a separate incident on Bridport Road, officers witnessed a woman stealing from a shop. She was subsequently reported to court for theft.

The police operation also extended onto Dorchester’s roads.

Following a vehicle stop, one driver was reported to court for careless driving, driving otherwise than in accordance with their driving licence and allowing two children to travel in the vehicle without restraints.

Meanwhile, officers have been conducting enquiries following a report that a young person had started a small fire in an open area of Poundbury.

And the policing operation has not been restricted to the town itself.

Intelligence-led hotspot foot patrols have been carried out in Dorchester town centre and across a number of surrounding villages, allowing officers to concentrate resources on locations where intelligence suggests problems may be occurring.

Taken together, the weekly update paints a picture of neighbourhood policing that goes considerably further than simply responding to emergency calls.

Officers are actively patrolling, searching, investigating, making arrests, visiting homes, tackling anti-social behaviour and putting suspected offenders before the courts.

The work also demonstrates why visible neighbourhood policing remains important. A wanted person was located during routine patrol activity, while plain-clothed officers were able to witness suspected thefts taking place in the town centre.

For local residents, the message is straightforward: Dorchester’s neighbourhood officers are continuing to put boots on the ground and target the problems being identified within the community.

Whether it is shoplifting in the town centre, anti-social behaviour affecting residents, road safety concerns or problems in surrounding villages, the latest police update shows officers taking action across a broad front.

It has been a busy week and for those involved in crime and anti-social behaviour, the increased visibility of Dorchester’s neighbourhood policing team provides a clear warning that officers are watching, patrolling and acting when offences are identified.
