Dorset Council Best In Country For Recycling Kerbside Waste

Dorset Council is pleased to announce it has retained its leading position as the number one unitary and disposal authority in England for recycling rates, according to the recently published national data set for 2023/24 by DEFRA.

Dorset Council now recycles 60.5% of all the waste it collects at the kerbside, against a national average of 44%.

In addition to achieving the top unitary spot, Dorset Council proudly ranks fifth overall among all councils, trailing only four collection authorities. Dorset Council also secured an impressive third place for the lowest residual waste collected per household, with an average of 363kg per household.

These results emphasise the Council’s commitment to reducing waste and improving recycling efforts across the region.

Cllr Jon Andrews, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Place Services, said: “I want to thank Dorset’s keen recyclers and our Waste Services team for this result. This remarkable achievement reflects the dedication of Dorset residents to sustainability and the hard work of our officers.

“Let’s continue to push this recycling rate even higher by putting the right stuff in the right bins, and reducing the amount of waste we produce. Together, we can set the benchmark for environmental stewardship and make a positive impact for future generations.”

You can find out more about how to recycle your waste, and what happens to the waste we collect, on the Dorset Council website.
