Dorset Council will be honouring veterans and live-streaming its annual Remembrance service this year to comply with COVID-19 restrictions.

The on-going pandemic means that the Remembrance service will be very different this year to ensure public safety and minimise the spread of the virus. The service will take place at 10.45am on Wednesday 11 November and will be a short, socially distanced event. The service will be led by Reverend John Yarrien with a maximum of eight wreaths being laid.

We will be live-streaming the service on Facebook and invite members of the public to join us online to remember and honour those who fought and died in the line of duty.

Cllr Val Pothecary, Chairman of Dorset Council, said:

“The pandemic means that this years’ Remembrance service will be very different, but it will not stop us from honouring the sacrifice of the fallen and valour of our veterans. We hope that residents will join the service via the live-stream on Wednesday 11 November, and we encourage people to ‘remember on their doorsteps’ this Remembrance Sunday to mark the two-minute silence.”

Councillors and employees are unfortunately not invited to attend the Remembrance service due to COVID-19 restrictions. A bugler will be in attendance and the Lord Lieutenant and Major Dan Tanner will read the Exhortation and Kohima respectively. Invitations have been strictly limited with a maximum of 14 persons in attendance.

The event will comply with any restrictions or guidance in place at the time but these arrangements may change if there is a change in official government guidance.

Remember on your doorstep this Remembrance Sunday

In normal times, we would be paying tribute to our armed forces at the Cenotaph or at public services on Remembrance Sunday. The pandemic has affected many events this year, however we can still mark the occasion from the safety of our homes.

With on-going restrictions and public health measures in place, we encourage you to ‘remember on your doorstep’ this year and pay your respects by standing on your doorstep at 11am on Remembrance Sunday to mark the two-minute silence.
