Popular cycle route leaflets have been updated and now include Weymouth and Portland.
Leaflets promoting the National Cycle Network (NCN) Routes 2 and 26 through West Dorset have been reproduced and updated and now include route details all the way to Weymouth and Portland.
The NCN routes already provide signposted cycle trails from Lyme Regis in the west and Sherborne in the north with some shorter circular routes along the way.
The Visit Dorset Tourism team worked with Dorset County Council to update both leaflets ready for the summer. Leaflets are available from Tourist Information Centres across Dorset or can be downloaded from www.visit-dorset.com.
The Visit Dorset Tourism team is also supporting a new Regional Growth Fund campaign led by VisitEngland dedicated to increasing the popularity and participation in cycling across England in 2014. The match funded project will see Dorset promoted in a 100 page supplement called ‘Cycling breaks in England’ in The Guardian on Saturday 14 June and on websites www.theguardian.com and www.VisitEngland.com/morecycling.
Cllr Rachel Rogers, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s Briefholder for Tourism and Culture, said “Dorset offers many opportunities for cycling, from signposted NCN routes throughout Dorset and scenic disused railway lines, such as the Rodwell Trail from Weymouth to Portland, to off road forest trails such as Moors Valley, which are great for families.
“For local residents and visitors alike, cycling is a fantastic way to explore our beautiful county, spend quality time with family or friends and get fitter while having a great time.”
The Visit Dorset Tourism Partnership is made up of the district and borough councils from West Dorset, Christchurch, Purbeck, East Dorset and Weymouth & Portland. The West Dorset District Council and Weymouth & Portland Borough Council tourism team is co-ordinating this activity on behalf of the other rural Dorset local authorities.
