The Dorset Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) has today launched a new campaign to find more Independent Custody Visitors (ICVs).

Dorset PCC Martyn Underhill and his team are recruiting ICVs, who inspect police cells and check on the welfare of those in detention. The volunteers can make unannounced visits to custody suites across the county.

There are currently 18 visitors in operation across the county and the Commissioner is keen to find other volunteers from across Dorset to help boost the numbers.

The Dorset Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner will hold three information events for those interested in volunteering at the Custody Suite, Joint Emergency Services Building, Wimborne Road, Poole, Dorset, BH15 2BP on Friday 28 February (10am), Monday 3 March (2pm) and Tuesday 4 March (7pm). These events will be attended by current custody visitors.

Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner Martyn Underhill said: “One of my strategic priorities is to ensure high standards of professionalism in Dorset Police. That includes the best possible standard of care in the county’s custody function. I would like to welcome new members of the public who are keen to help the Force deliver on this aspect of the Police and Crime Plan.”

Chair of the Dorset Custody Visiting Panel, Kathie Emery said, “The job of a custody visitor is essential. This is an extremely important role that checks on the welfare of people who are being held in custody. The visits provide detainees with the opportunity to raise a concern about their detention. The Custody Visitor will then raise the problem with the custody officers and the problem can be solved.”

The closing date for applications is Friday 21 March 2014.
