Dorset Police were hit with a £66,338 bill for sending police to London during last year’s Coronation. Research by local anti-monarchy activists has uncovered the hidden costs of the coronation as part of a wider campaign by Republic.

Local campaigners have been sending freedom of information requests to a number of public bodies to work out how much taxpayers’ money was wasted on the royal event.

Speaking for the local Dorset Republic group, activist Robert Powell said:

“It’s shocking that Dorset Police decided to spend £66,338 on the Coronation.”

“With local people struggling with the cost-of-living crisis, how can Dorset Police justify throwing money at Charles’s parade?”

“£66,338 could have given 48 Dorset nurses an inflation-busting pay rise*. With schools, hospitals, and key council services all under pressure, why are local people being asked to pay for Charles’s coronation?”

“The monarchy isn’t just bad for our democracy. It impacts our economy and damages local services.”

“Charles could have covered the cost of the Coronation from his own untaxed personal wealth. Instead, he allowed money to be diverted from vital local services during a cost-of-living crisis.”

A spokesperson from the Dorset Republic Local Group is available for further comment.
