Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) is launching its new Wild Futures programme – an exciting opportunity for young people, aged 14-25 to actively get involved with wildlife conservation in the Weymouth and Portland area.

The aim of the project is to give young people the chance to learn about local wildlife, and give them a taste of what it’s like working in conservation.  DWT hopes this programme will help young people build their career in conservation, enable them to continue into higher education, or simply develop a greater appreciation for wildlife or get involved with local volunteering.

The new recruits will take part in local and national wildlife surveys such as shark eggcases, butterflies, wildflowers and ponds, directly contributing to the scientific understanding of wildlife in Dorset.  They will also contribute to the practical management of important habitats on nature reserves.  The hours could also go towards the Duke of Edinburgh award or John Muir Award.

DWT’s Chesil Centre Officer, Marc Smith, said, “Weymouth and Portland has some of the most stunning and important coastline and countryside in the UK for wildlife.  This is not only a great opportunity for young people to get onto the conservation ladder and spend some time outdoors, but to also make a meaningful difference to the wildlife in the area.  Whilst helping wildlife, young people will pick up skills in team work and communication whilst gaining some extra confidence, and perhaps new friends along the way.”

DWT runs the Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre, Lorton Meadows Conservation Centre, and has nature reserves in the area, including Tout and King Barrow Quarries on Portland.

The first ‘get together’ is on Saturday 18thMarch, from 10am – 2.30pm which is a free introductory session talking about the awards and programme, followed by some tips on taking great wildlife photos on your phone.  All sessions after this will be £5.  Booking is essential to enrol on the programme, phone 01305 206191 or email [email protected].  Visit www.dorsetwildlfetrust.org.uk/events to see the other Wild Futures events lined up for the rest of the year, and search under Weymouth and Portland.
