People going on about ‘lefties’ wearing masks. Have a little read about the Spycops Scandal and how it was disproportionately left-wing groups that were targeted.
The Spycops scandal, which emerged into public consciousness through the landmark Undercover Policing Inquiry, revealed a systematic and deeply intrusive programme of state surveillance targeting political groups in the UK. For decades, beginning in 1968, undercover police officers from units such as the Special Demonstration Squad and the National Public Order Intelligence Unit assumed false identities to infiltrate hundreds of organisations. These officers, often referred to as ‘spycops’, lived their fabricated lives for years, forming deep personal relationships and even fathering children with activists, all under the guise of their manufactured personas. This long-running deception represented a fundamental breach of trust and an extraordinary violation of the right to private life of those affected.
A central and highly contentious aspect of the scandal has been the overwhelmingly disproportionate targeting of left-wing and progressive campaigns. While police authorities initially claimed the units were necessary to monitor potential threats of public disorder, the evidence has shown a clear bias against groups advocating for social justice, environmental protection, and workers’ rights. Trade unions, anti-racist organisations, family justice campaigns, and environmental activists like Greenpeace found themselves subject to sustained infiltration. In stark contrast, far-right and racist groups, which posed a documented and violent threat to public safety, were largely ignored, revealing a troubling political prejudice at the heart of the state’s surveillance apparatus.
The legacy of the Spycops scandal is a profound and enduring damage to public confidence in policing. The revelations have exposed not just the methods used, but a disturbing ideology that viewed legitimate dissent and political opposition as a legitimate target for state-sanctioned espionage. The subsequent battles for disclosure, the ongoing public inquiry, and the numerous apologies forced from the Metropolitan Police have highlighted a culture of secrecy and unaccountability. The scandal stands as a stark warning about the dangers of unscrutinised state power and the ease with which policing can be weaponised against the very citizens and democratic principles it is meant to protect.
Remember when this happened in dear old Dorset and these rancid excuses for humanity were given carte blanche to spray the local community with their racism and misogyny? No? Well, many locals do, and it makes them sick to their stomachs.
When we held an anti-racist demo here on Portland, the police turned up to film us. They did not, however, film the Neo-Nazi, Holocaust-denying violent thugs of Patriotic Alternative who turned up to terrorise the refugees. Instead, a local police sergeant went around shaking their hands and chatting with them (a complaint with the IOPC is ongoing).
I never wore a mask for my activism; I stood by what I said. I was rewarded for this by people telling my teenage daughter and me that we deserve to be raped, having my car damaged, my daughter being called a slag by a GROWN-ASS MAN, and someone making a hate site about us using a picture of me and my dead father. These thugs target homes, places of worship, and workplaces. So yeah, I get why people choose to wear masks.
