Extinction Rebellion Stage Striking Protest in Bournemouth to Expose COP30 “Failure and Hypocrisy”

Bournemouth, Sunday 9 November 2025 — Extinction Rebellion Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole (XR BCP) held a striking silent action this morning on Bournemouth Pier Approach, calling out what they describe as the “failure and hypocrisy” of the international COP climate talks ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

At 11:00am, the group began with a two-minute silence. Participants stood in complete stillness to honour:

  • the war dead
  • species already lost to ecological breakdown
  • climate activists imprisoned around the world for peaceful protest
  • and the people of the future who will suffer due to continued political inaction on climate

Following the silence, the XR BCP Rhythms — the group’s samba-style protest band — began playing a powerful beat as activists formed a living exhibition of placards. Each placard carried a stark message about the reality of climate breakdown and the failures of political leadership.

Placard messages included:

  • “30 Climate Summits. Emissions Still Rising. How Many More Talks Before Action?”
  • “1.5°C Is Dead. Leaders Killed It With Broken Promises.”
  • “The Global South Drowns While the Global North Delays.”
  • “2.6°C of Warming Ahead — That’s Not a Future, It’s a Funeral.”

The action was intentionally calm, and visually powerful. By occupying a busy public space without chanting or blocking access, the group aimed to create a moment of reflection and connection — a sharp contrast to what they describe as the “performative noise” of global climate negotiations.

Daniel Glennon, a customer service professional and spokesperson for XR BCP said:

“For 30 years, world leaders have flown to expensive conferences, made grand speeches, and signed promises that are repeatedly broken. Meanwhile, emissions rise, temperatures break records, and people are dying. We are done with words — that’s why today we chose silence.”

Despite 30 UN climate summits, global emissions are still increasing and the planet is currently on track for 2.6°C of warming, according to recent scientific assessments. XR BCP argue that COP30 is already compromised, with fossil fuel lobbyists historically outnumbering many country delegations at previous conferences.

The group now calls for:

  • an end to new fossil fuel extraction
  • binding legal commitments to reduce emissions
  • climate justice funding for countries already suffering climate impacts

The spokesperson continued:

“We stood in silence because the world needs to hear the truth. We are out of time for negotiations that end in applause but achieve nothing. Real change starts with ordinary people taking action locally.”

Extinction Rebellion BCP says they will continue taking action locally, with the group inviting local residents to learn more via their social media channels or by attending a monthly meeting.

About Extinction Rebellion

Extinction Rebellion (XR) is a decentralised, international and politically non-partisan movement using nonviolent direct action and civil disobedience to persuade governments to act justly on the Climate and Ecological Emergency.

Time has almost entirely run out to address the climate and ecological crisis that is upon us, including the sixth mass species extinction, global pollution, and increasingly rapid climate change. If urgent and radical action isn’t taken, we’re heading towards 4°C warming, leading to societal collapse and mass loss of life. The younger generation, racially marginalised communities and the Global South are on the front line. No one will escape the devastating impacts.
