FACT CHECKING WEEKLY 13/5/2016

One of the reasons citizen media has evolved in to such a formidable (but very likeable) beast is that it recognises that the corporate media leave stuff out they don’t like or agree with. This results in bias and confusion amongst the public. This won’t go away but it can be partially redeemed by becoming empowered to find out for ourselves and to find sources that focus solely upon the facts and their analysis. With this in mind Dorset Eye has utilised a wonderful charity that does just this.

Every Friday we will publish their update from the previous week and enable our readers to fact check some of the most discussed and debated national issues over the previous seven days.

Some of the highlights this week:

Claim: The EU plans to ban British kettles, toasters and hairdryers.

Conclusion: At best this is a stretch. It’s not a ban: the EU is considering regulation which would limit the amount of energy appliances such as kettles and hairdryers use. A study into the proposals has been drafted, but no legislation has been brought forward yet.

“500,000 [people] will die because of this country’s failure to comply with international law on air pollution”—Jeremy Corbyn

The government is in breach of EU rules on air pollution, and researchers say that pollution causes deaths. We’re not sure about half a million, though
