Dr David Collins, the FE Commissioner has visited Weymouth College as part of the Structures Prospects and Appraisal (SPA) and is impressed by the actions taken to bring the budget back into surplus, quoting that he is “delighted with the progress that Weymouth College has made under its new leadership and management, its successful delivery for students is now being underpinned by a much improved financial performance. Staff are to be congratulated on what they have achieved”.

As reported earlier this year, College managers have worked intensively since November to put together a comprehensive strategy for the next academic year which retains a broad curriculum offer, whilst strengthening the College’s finances after several years of deficits.

The plan builds on actions already taken over the past nine months which have achieved savings of over £1m through tighter control of pay and non-pay costs, efficiency improvements and improved procurement.

In what is anticipated to be the penultimate meeting with Dr Collins, senior managers presented the latest financial developments to Dr Collins and his team reinforcing that the College has a long, secure and independent future.

Nigel Evans, Acting Principal sees this as an important milestone for the College and the Community. ”This is a real vote of confidence from the FE Commissioner in Weymouth College. We can now all look forward now to building on our strong foundations that have been laid this year and to the exciting new academic year ahead.” We would welcome everyone to come and have a look around the College

as we open our doors on Saturday 27th June 11-2pm as we celebrate what we have achieved this year.” I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all Weymouth College staff and governors for their fantastic support and commitment since I took on the role of Principal six months ago

Representatives of the Funding Agencies have echoed Dr Collins, in his praise for the significant progress of Weymouth College, and the way in which the College has approached the funding pressures which are facing all colleges in the country.

Weymouth College is encouraging people to come and visit the College and hear about the developments for themselves. The College offers a wide-range of courses and provision for students of all ages and abilities. The family-friendly Open Day will offer people an opportunity to take part in try-a-skill sessions, talk to lecturers, take campus tours and for parents, free vehicle summer checks. The day will also have a BBQ and music.
