Tim FitzHigham: The Gambler

Multi award-winning comedian, adventurer and world record holder Tim FitzHigham has lots of bad ideas (he rowed the English Channel in a bathtub). Now, inspired by centuries-old bets, recorded in the betting books of revered gentlemen’s clubs, Tim attempts a host of new feats including pushing a wheelbarrow 25 miles, in a bet with Top Gear’s Richard Hammond (as first attempted by Goliath Shadbolt in 1789), standing on one leg for 12 hours (a bet from the year 1815), cycling from London to Dover before his friend can draw a million dots and more besides!

Locus Amoenus

Three strangers catch a train at 5.07am. An hour later, the train is derailed and all three are killed. What thoughts go through the minds of people who don’t know they are about to die? Catalan theatre company ATRESBANDES are rapidly establishing a reputation as creators of sharp, perceptive work for international audiences.

Dr John Cooper Clarke shot to prominence in the 1970s as the original ‘people’s poet’.  Since then his career has spanned cultures, audiences, art forms and continents.His latest show is a mix of classic verse, extraordinary new material, and hilarious ponderings on modern life, good honest gags, riffs and chat – a chance to witness a living legend at the top of his game. 

Secondary Cause of Death

Inspector Pratt arrives at Bagshot House with grim news for Colonel Craddock, but that’s just the beginning. Who is the strange Polish Count? Is Henrietta really an army Captain? How does the eccentric thespian, Longfellow fit in to the equation? These are just some of the characters who make Pratt’s return a chaotic nightmare as the bodies pile higher and higher. Starring Jeffrey Holland (Hi-de-Hi!), Judy Buxton (On the Up) and David Callister (The Bill).

Armonico Consort – Dido and Aeneas (Purcell) / Stabat Mater (Pergolesi)

Whilst Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas is the only complete opera written during his short life,
it has become a work at the heart of British musical heritage. One of the world’s leading baroque voices, Elin Manahan Thomas, performs the title role in this stunning and dramatic
concert performance of the first masterpiece in English opera. From the short life of one composer to another, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was an Italian court composer who died at the age of just 26. Written in the final weeks of his life, this deeply moving piece is widely recognised as the definitive setting of the spiritual text, and has been described as ‘the master work of Latin music’.

The Legend of the Holy Drinker

Platform 4 presents The Legend of the Holy Drinker, based on the novella by Joseph Roth. A bar in the Rue de Tournon, Paris; it is 2.00a.m; closing time, but two street performers persuade a tired landlady to give them one ‘last’ drink and to hear their story. Three performers, one puppet, a ukulele and an accordion, songs, dance, a bar, the night, a drink or two … and ‘The Legend of the Holy drinker’.

The Magic Beanstalk

A new show for primary school children, their teachers, carers and families. Set in present day Cornwall, beautiful hand carved puppets, illusion and amazing experiments are used to re-tell the classic story of Jack and the Giant who lives through the clouds and over the rainbow.

NT Live: As You Like It
