Flood Alert Issued for Dorset’s West Coast as High Tides Loom

A flood alert is in force for large stretches of Dorset’s west coast, with flooding possible during high tides this evening, Friday, 30 January 2026.

Communities at risk include Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seatown, West Bay, Bothenhampton, Burton Freshwater, Burton Bradstock, Cogden Beach, Chesil Beach, West Fleet, East Fleet and Chiswell. The alert warns that forecast weather conditions could combine with high tides to generate larger waves, increasing the risk of flooding along coastal roads and footpaths.

Authorities say the most affected locations are likely to be exposed coastal routes and promenades. Residents and visitors are being urged to avoid beaches and coastal promenades, which may become flooded as conditions worsen.

The situation is being closely monitored, and the alert will be updated by 10:30am on Saturday 31 January 2026, or sooner if circumstances change.

Be prepared

People in the affected areas are advised to:

  • Check the latest flood risk maps and updates via the Check for flooding service
  • Be ready to act on a personal flood plan, if they have one
  • Follow official guidance on what to do before or during a flood

Stay up-to-date.

For the latest information, residents can:

  • Use the Check for flooding service online
  • Monitor local weather forecasts, news and travel updates
  • Call Floodline on 0345 988 1188, using quick dial code 045312

The alert has been issued to those signed up for flood warnings in the area, and officials stress that staying informed and taking sensible precautions could reduce the risk of harm as high tides approach.
