A DORSET care home brushed up on its ‘owl-gebra’ for a flying visit by three birds of prey.
Residents at Colten Care’s Amberwood House in Ferndown were introduced to a barn owl called Luna; Gizmo, awhite faced African scops owl, and Misty, a 12-week-old Chaco owl.
They were brought to the home by Mike Savage and Chris Mellows of the Soft Landing Animal Aid Association.
Both falconers are frequent visitors to Colten Care homes where they talk about the birds as well as encourage residents to hold the owls.
Mike described the experience as “unique” adding: “It not only brings entertainment to the less mobile but also allows residents to get up close with these beautiful birds of prey.”
Amberwood resident Florence Hughes said the display was “uplifting and therapeutic” while Gwen Keeping said the owls were “absolutely fascinating.”
Jan Burns, Activities Organiser, said the visit had been a huge success.
“Mike and Chris went to a huge amount of trouble and it’s fair to say our residents were fascinated by the birds. They were still talking about days after the event,” Jan added.
