Residents and visitors to Weymouth town can enjoy free overnight parking from 1 April permanently as part of a huge shake-up of parking in the borough.
From 1 April 2014 people will be able to park in Weymouth & Portland Borough Council-run car parks free of charge every day from 6pm – 9.30am.
Normal pay and display charges will apply at all other times.
People parking in borough council-run car parks will also benefit from cheaper car parking prices from 1 April.
Cllr Christine James, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council Transport and Infrastructure brief holder, said: “We are pleased to be able to offer cheaper parking charges in borough council-run car parks and also make free overnight parking permanent as part of a revolutionary parking review.
“We have been working hard for some years to come up with a parking scheme that suits all and will keep working on the review to make the service the best it can be for people.
“I hope residents, local businesses and visitors take full advantage of these positive changes to parking in the borough.
“We have introduced these changes to encourage people to park in the town centre and increase footfall both in the day and in the evening.
“The council tries to lower prices where we can during these difficult economic times.”
The concession will not apply to on-street pay and display parking, where normal charges will apply at all times.
Car parks at Castletown, Chesil and Portland Bill, which are operated but not owned by the borough council, are not included in the change.
