Friday Night Disability/Wheelchair Sports Sessions

Nick and Sue Coombs, co-founders of the highly successful Dorset Destroyers Wheelchair Rugby Club have now started a Friday Night Disability/Wheelchair Sports Sessions based at Rossmore Leisure Centre Herbert Avenue, Poole, BH12 4HR

It is open to anyone with a disability (Registered or not), whether it’s a touch of Arthritis to Amputees, Fibromyalgia to Cerebral Palsy. You don’t have to use a wheelchair to play; we do have a few spares. But if you want to borrow one of our chairs we have 4 spare, or if you prefer just stand and play.

When? Friday Nights 7 till 9pm

What’s on offer? We’ve got Wheelchair Basketball, Handball, Badminton, Swing Ball and many other things to be added.  You can bring an able bodied person to partner up with you if you want.

Cost? £4 per session, but you can play as many sports as you like.

Badminton Courts need to be booked on 01202 738787 7pm and 8pm.

We asked Nick why he was opening a new club “Well the Dorset Destroyers proved to everyone that competitive sport was desperately wanted as we have attracted many players. But for those who don’t want to play the sport of wheelchair rugby I thought it would be good to just give people the chance to play a sport that they can enjoy, have fun with their friends and be competitive if they wanted.”

Sue Coombs, Nick’s wife continued “This is aimed as a more leisurely night. It’s not a hard intensive session. If you get tired of one sport and there is something else available, you just go over and play it, whether you want to shoot a few hoops of Basketball, maybe try out Handball or Swingball”

Do you have any other plans in the pipeline? Funnily enough we are having 2 Taster Sessions for a Disability Shooting Club, using Air Pistols and Air Rifles on Friday October 14thand Friday November 11that Rossmore Leisure Centre, run by Ferndown Gun Club and myself.
