For some reason, some people still think all employers are nice people, trying their hardest to do their best for their staff.
That might be true in some cases – in a lot of cases, maybe – but the balance of power between boss and worker is as one-sided as it has ever been, with the employer holding pretty much all the cards. That’s why trade unions are essential in every workplace; to take some of the power back.
Not convinced? Have a look at this list of “bastard” bosses from 2012 and think again . . .
The boss who docked his staff a day’s wages for attending a ten-minute union meeting
The boss who gave his staff a £7 a week pay rise . . . then promptly charged them £8 to park
The boss who threatened to sack his staff for wearing the wrong vest
The boss who threatened to fire all 5,400 workers unless they signed a new, worse contract
The boss who banned staff talking about the TUC’s October 20th demonstration
The boss who thanked staff for making the Olympics such a success . . . then sacked them
The boss who threatened to fire staff unless they moved from Scotland and Wales to England
The boss who tried to ban posters being put up at work
