Dorset Council has awarded £137,751 to Weymouth Civic Society to support vital waterproofing works at Nothe Fort. The investment will help protect the historic landmark, reduce water ingress, and create better conditions for exhibits, events and visitors.
The works form part of Nothe Fort’s wider programme to address longstanding damp issues and improve the visitor experience. The waterproofing is planned to begin from March 2026, minimising disruption to day-to-day operations wherever possible.
Cllr Richard Biggs, Cabinet Member for Property & Assets and Economic Growth, said:
“This is about protecting a place people love while helping Weymouth’s economy to thrive all year round. Nothe Fort is central to the town’s heritage and visitor appeal. By tackling the waterproofing now, we’re safeguarding the building, supporting local jobs and volunteers, and giving families and schools an even better experience in the years ahead.”
Graham Atwood, Chair of Nothe Fort, said:
“I am delighted with the award of this grant, which reflects the tremendous effort over many months by the team at Nothe Fort. Weymouth Civic Society and the Nothe Fort team are immensely appreciative of the support we receive from Dorset Council, the local community, and wider stakeholders in helping to secure the future of this key heritage asset.”
The funding will protect a flagship local attraction overlooking Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour, helping the town sustain a strong year-round visitor offer, supporting local jobs and businesses, and enabling more community events and school visits.
By keeping the building dry, the fort can better look after its collections and improve indoor spaces so residents and visitors enjoy a higher quality experience whatever the time of year or the weather.
