Dorset Wildlife Trust has the answer to the January blues, with an invitation to get out volunteering for wildlife at its new Weekend Work Parties on Upton Heath. Suitable for the whole family, the monthly sessions will give families and full time workers no excuses for putting off their good deed for wildlife in 2013.
The new Sunday volunteering sessions will involve practical conservation work with the wardens on this important wildlife site. Noel Bergin, Dorset Wildlife Trust Conservation Officer, said: “This is a chance for everybody to get involved with helping their local wildlife and maybe even losing some of the Christmas weight we all put on! There is nothing like a day out working on the reserve amongst the wildlife and a great bunch of people to set you up for the week ahead, and you can go home knowing you’ve helped with vital habitat protection for some of the rarest wildlife in Britain.”
The Weekend Work Parties take place on the last Sunday of every month at 10am, starting on 27thJanuary. Over the winter the focus is on practical work such as clearing invasive scrub. From April, the group will concentrate on wildlife surveys as the bird and reptile breeding season is under way.
Noel added: “You don’t need any experience and you can work at your own pace and come to as many or as few sessions as you like. Come and help keep Upton Heath in good shape for wildlife.”
Meet at The Urban Wildlife Centre, Beacon Hill Lane, Corfe Mullen (BH21 3RX). DWT will provide tools and safety equipment, but please wear sensible footwear and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and bring food and drinks.
