Local people are invited to lace up their walking boots and join The Dorset Mind BIG Walk on Sunday 27 September 2026, a community coastal walking event encouraging people to get outdoors, connect with others and raise vital funds for mental health support across Dorset.
Dorset Mind’s flagship annual fundraising event returns for another year, bringing individuals, families, friends, workplaces and community groups together for a day of walking, connection and community.
We know how powerful spending time outdoors can be for our wellbeing. Each year, the Dorset Mind BIG Walk reminds us of the positive impact that moving our bodies, enjoying nature and connecting with others can have on how we feel.
The event is inspired by the 5 Ways to Wellbeing, which encourage people to Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning and Give. The BIG Walk gives people the opportunity to be active, spend time outdoors and walk for their own reason, whether that’s for themselves, someone they care about, or a cause that matters to them.
Last year, 70 walkers took part in The Dorset Mind BIG Walk, raising more than £4,000 to support Dorset Mind’s work across the county. This year, we’re hoping to welcome even more people to take part and experience the benefits of walking, connection and community.
Participants can choose between two routes:
30K Coastal Challenge
For those looking for a bigger challenge, the 30K route starts at Sandbanks and heads towards Hengistbury Head before returning along the coastline. This full-day walking challenge is ideal for regular walkers, fundraising teams and anyone looking to push themselves while experiencing some of Dorset’s most stunning scenery.
5K Wellbeing Walk
A shorter and more accessible route from Sandbanks to Branksome Chine Beach, suitable for all ages and abilities. This relaxed route is a great way to get involved, whether walking with family, friends, colleagues or taking part for the first time.
There is also a flexible join option at Hengistbury Head for participants taking on the 30K Coastal Challenge.
The event will begin at Sandbanks, with participants asked to arrive from 7:45am ahead of an 8:30am start.
Entry is £10 per adult, with children aged 16 and under able to take part free when accompanied by a registered adult.
Every step taken will help raise vital funds for Dorset Mind, supporting mental health services, community wellbeing programmes and early intervention support across Dorset.
Participants are encouraged to fundraise alongside their challenge, with anyone raising £50 or more receiving a free Dorset Mind BIG Walk t-shirt to wear on the day.
