Global commentator Carlos Martinez to speak on Cuba
A local group of friends has invited internationally-known campaigner, author and YouTuber Carlos Martinez to speak in Weymouth to help raise funds for Cuba.
The Caribbean island of Cuba is suffering a blockade, recently intensified by US President Donald Trump, that has cut off most of its oil supplies. As a result, energy blackouts are hampering food production, the ability of hospitals to treat patients, transport (including ambulances), schools, and Cuba’s tourism industry.
The fundraising event will take place on Friday, March 13, from 7.30pm at the Centenary Club, Weymouth DT4 7BG. It is free to attend but donations are welcome, on the night or via BACS to the Portland Global Friendship Group (bank sort code 60 83 01; account 20500774). All funds raised will be donated to Cuba via the Cuba Solidarity Campaign.
John Burbidge, Secretary of the Tolpuddle branch of Unite, who lives in Weymouth, said: “We are a group of friends who do not belong to any one particular party or organisation, but we know bullying when we see it. With its blockade of Cuba, the USA is creating big problems for ordinary people on this tiny island who have done nothing to threaten the USA. With this event, we want to raise some funds for humanitarian relief.”
Carlos Martinez said: “Cuba’s extreme economic difficulties are entirely the result of the criminal US blockade. Any reasonable person can see that the Trump regime urgently wants to topple Cuban socialism.”
Cuba is less than half the size of the UK, and is famous for its free universal healthcare and for supplying medical teams to poorer countries, though the US is pressuring these countries to send them home.
