Weymouth Town Council are delighted to say that this year’s summer sports programme has been hailed as an outstanding success by event organisers, supporters, visitors, volunteers and participants.

The blue skies and bright sunshine throughout the ten-day programme complimented the spectacle and attracted large crowds to support, cheer and be inspired by the sporting action on Weymouth Beach. It is estimated 20,000 people visited the site throughout the programme.

Over 1,000 people participated in activities and competitions throughout the sports programme including local school children, beach volleyball Olympians, Royal Navy teams and local sports clubs. Sports featured in the programme included football, rugby, long distance swimming, beach volleyball, cricket, beach aerobics, fitness classes, water sports and children’s beach games.

The sports programme concluded with the finals of the Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic. With over 21 countries represented and record crowds packing the show court enjoying high quality beach volleyball, it was a great way to bring the sports programme to a successful finale.

Cllr Graham Winter, Mayor of Weymouth Town Council said:

“The sports programme was supported and managed by Weymouth Town Council with the incredible support of an army of local volunteers, event organisers and sports club members. The event also generated funding for a local hospice, gave a heathy boost to the local visitor economy and generated a huge amount of positive publicity for Weymouth. I attended the Beach Volleyball Classic finals which attracted a great crowd creating a fabulous atmosphere and superb showcase spectacle for Weymouth. Many congratulations to all that took part in this great summer of sport on Weymouth Beach”.

Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic directors Peter Bennet and Graeme Sawyer said:

“We are both delighted at the success of this year’s Championships on Weymouth Beach, the praise from visiting teams and the national association has been superb and made all the effort worthwhile. We would like to express our thanks to Weymouth Town Council and the Weymouth Bid for their support, alongside all of our wonderful team of volunteers from the local Volleyball Club”.

Plans are well underway for the 2020 Weymouth summer sports programme with the aim of developing the programme and establishing a sporting and activity legacy for Weymouth. If you are interested in being part of Weymouth’s annual sports programme, please contact Weymouth Town Council.
