Green Party Candidate in Local By-Election

South East Dorset Green Party is pleased to announce that we will be standing a candidate, Dr Fiona Cownie, in the Mudeford and Friars Cliff by-election to be held on Thursday 2nd March.

Fiona says:

“I am proud to represent the Green Party with its focus on community and environment.  I have lived in Christchurch for over 20 years.  Over much of that time I have been a working mother, combining caring for two sons with my work at Bournemouth University.

“Mudeford and Friars Cliff are close to my heart.  My husband and I married at All Saints Church and I can be seen in the early morning running along the beach, past our wonderful cafes and onto Steamer Point.

“I hope that my life and work experiences alongside my energy and passion will enable me to represent and support those who live in Mudeford and Friars Cliff.”

Fiona’s support for the Green Party is long-standing.  She is a great supporter of Caroline Lucas and the Green Party’s leadership stance on UK, global and European issues.  Fiona is deeply concerned about the UK’s move away from Europe and its implications for the environment and community on a local, UK and international scale.

A message of support has been received from Caroline Lucas, joint leader of the Green Party, who says:

“I wish the Greens the best of luck in this byelection. Last year the people of Dorset elected the first Green onto the County Council – paving the way for further success. By voting for Fiona you can be sure of electing someone who will fight your corner and stand up for your interests. For properly funded social care, the protection of the environment and for clean beaches I urge you to vote Green on 2nd March.”

Policy focus:

Protecting our beaches during Brexit: avoiding over development; sustaining beach cleanliness and water quality without EU legislation as support.

Increasing support for social care.

Insulation of homes – avoid fuel poverty.

Protecting Mudeford spit as SSSI post-Brexit and EU legislation.

Promoting cycle safety and access within Mudeford and Friars Cliff.

Protecting our NHS.

Code of conduct for local councillors’ payment of taxes.

Stop further out of town development – support Christchurch’s local shops.

Taking responsibility for our environment and health.
