Last week, an independent councillor resigned while blaming “far left” elements and the “green agenda,” describing members of the council as “the worst people [he’s] ever come across.”
It has since emerged that he stepped down while subject to a formal misconduct investigation by the local authority.
A short statement from Cllr Kia Pope, leader of the Green group on Portland Town Council, said:
“Political disagreement is part of democracy. Attempting to deflect from an active investigation by attacking colleagues is not.
If those remarks were directed at the Green Group, I welcome them. We are proud to stand for equality, integrity, and restoring Dorset’s precious natural world.
Our green agenda is to fight the waste incinerator being imposed on Portland and to lower your bills – by getting us off dirty imported fossil fuels and onto clean, renewable energy made right here in the UK.
I am delighted to announce that the Green Party has selected Mark Williams as our candidate for any forthcoming by-election.”
Mark Williams is an active community volunteer, involved in the campaign against the incinerator. He is standing to ensure Tophill East is represented by someone focused on practical solutions, fairness, and accountable leadership.
Mark Williams said:
“Portland faces a number of challenges, and the last thing the community needs is divisive politics. As Councillor, my focus will be on Portland, ensuring islanders get the support and respect they deserve; opposing the waste incinerator, preserving our unique wild places, and facing down ill-advised development. I am proud that Portland is my home, and prouder still of our community which, when the chips are down, pulls together.”
