1 hour, 8 people, 12 bags of rubbish!
The local Green Party was out wombling in Weymouth over the Bank Holiday Weekend, joined by members of the local community. The Community Litter Pick was organised by the Green Party after the street-litter issue was raised by residents living around Rodwell.
The 8 volunteers collected litter along Rodwell Road, Franchise Street, Wyke Road and Chickerell Road, and streets in between and made a real difference to the look and feel of the area.
One resident from James Street said they were surprised that the Borough Council no longer seemed to do street cleaning. “I’ve phoned the council about the litter and the street dirt that is now blocking the drainage in the road, but they say they can do nothing”. The resident was very pleased to see the Green Team out litter picking, “It’s great that someone is organising this”.
“It was actually good fun and very rewarding” said Clare Sutton, who stood as the Green Party candidate in Weymouth East during last May’s Borough Council elections. “Everyone is welcome to join us; it’s surprising what can be achieved in just one hour when we work together!”
The local Green Party and community volunteers will be organising more litter picking events around Weymouth in the future. If you would like to join in or find out more, please email the Green Matters team at [email protected].
