Greenhill and Sandsfoot Gardens in Weymouth have been recognised by the Green Flag Award scheme as being amongst the very best green spaces in the world.
The Green Flag Award scheme recognises and rewards well managed parks and open spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.
Graham Winter, Mayor of Weymouth Town Council, said:
“It’s an amazing achievement to win these awards once again and is testament to the hard work of the parks team and Friends Groups.”
“We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining Greenhill and Sandsfoot Gardens to such a high standard.”
Paula Klaentschi, Chair of the Friends of Rodwell Trail and Sandsfoot Gardens, said:
“The solace that our Green Flag gardens have provided and continue to provide has never been so important to locals and visitors. As each day comes and goes one can witness individuals and small careful groups coming and refilling their emotional batteries, rain or shine. Whether it is to see the stars, watch a storm, or marvel at the plants, all find pleasure in our Gardens.”
“Thank you to the wonderful gardeners from Weymouth Town Council who work so hard to keep them in such good condition.”
Paul Todd, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, said:
“Parks and green spaces have never been more important for the physical and mental health of everyone. All the research shows that spending time in good-quality green space can improve people’s health and wellbeing, that is why it is important that they are managed to the recognised standard of the Green Flag Award. This is now something that millions more recognise after the challenges of the past six months.”
“All those involved in the Green Flag Award should be congratulated on their achievement.”
