Greg James to Begin His Comic Relief Challenge From Weymouth

On Friday 13th March, BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show host Greg James will be in Weymouth as he sets off on an epic cycling challenge to raise money for Comic Relief

Greg will be taking on ‘Radio 1’s Longest Ride’, attempting to cycle from Weymouth all the way to Edinburgh for this year’s challenge, with the first leg of the journey starting on the South Coast.

Welcoming the news, Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson said: “Amazing news! We know Greg has given regular shout outs to Weymouth on his Radio 1 breakfast show before, so to have him start his cycle challenge for Comic Relief on our iconic seafront will be fantastic for the town. I’m sure residents will join me in giving Greg a warm Weymouth welcome as we cheer him on during the morning of Friday, 13th March.”

Speaking about the challenge as it was revealed live on his Radio 1 Breakfast Show on Thursday, 12th February, Greg said: “I’m going to attempt to cycle 1000 km over 8 days, the longest duration we’ve done. It’s going to start on the South Coast of England, in Weymouth, a place that I love, a place that is very dear to me. A lot of my family are from Weymouth; we thought that would be quite a fun place to start.”

Radio 1 are known for their support of Comic Relief and Sport Relief, with several presenters lacing up their trainers to embark on various demanding challenges, testing both their physical and mental strength and endurance.

Greg James is no stranger to this kind of endeavour, previously embarking on the ‘Gregathlon’ in 2016, a challenge that saw him complete a triathlon in a different city across five consecutive days, with over £770.00 raised for Sport Relief. If that wasn’t enough, in 2018, Greg raised over ?1 million for Sport Relief by climbing five of the tallest mountains in the UK, as well as cycling between each destination in freezing and icy conditions as the Beast from the East swept across the nation.

More details will be shared by the organisers about the challenge on the day. Keep an eye on BBC Radio 1’s social media for more information and to keep up with Greg’s challenge.
