The idea of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London was proposed by the then Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. The ULEZ initiative was part of his broader efforts to address air pollution and improve air quality in the city. The plan was officially announced in 2013 as a way to reduce emissions from vehicles and combat the health and environmental issues associated with poor air quality in London.
Boris Johnson’s successor, Sadiq Khan, continued to support and expand the ULEZ during his time as Mayor. Under his leadership, the ULEZ was implemented in phases, with the first phase taking effect in April 2019, the second phase planned for October 2021 and the third phase in 2023.
The ULEZ concept was not unique to London, and similar initiatives have been proposed or implemented in other cities around the world to address the challenges posed by vehicle emissions and air pollution.
When Boris Johnson was London mayor, the Tories banged the drum for the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ); now that it is Sadiq Khan, they are making out they hate it. This is not about the well-being of the people of London; this is about politics and staying in power. In reality, the Tories do not give a **** about any of us unless it serves their purpose. If Boris Johnson had any credibility, he would support Sadiq Khan. Why? Because he was the person who trumpeted it and its virtues. However, he has no credibility and will almost certainly stay quiet while the public is yet again lied to and hoodwinked.
