Half term autumn activities with Dorset Wildlife Trust

Dorset wildlife trust is celebrating the changing seasons by hosting some exciting autumnal events to encourage children to get out and about this half term. 

To experience the colours and wildlife of the season, the Kingcombe Centre in West Dorset is hosting their last scavenger hunt of the year on Tuesday 29th October from 10-12pm. Using a trail guided map, solve the wildlife riddles to find autumn-themed items. Collect every item and win a special prize!

Lorton Meadows in Weymouth is holding Caterpillar Kids sessions, looking at autumn colours and wildlife on 31st October and 1st November and a family conservation task on 30th October. DWT Conservation Officer, Catherine Mason said, “When the seasons are changing, it is a great time to come and explore Lorton Meadows –the trees are covered with fruitsand berries which attract birdsand mammals at this time of year. We are looking forward to taking people around the reserve to explore wildlife and enjoy the stunning views.”  

Or, if you fancy visiting the stunning coastline in Dorset, and getting your wellies wet,the Living Seas Team’s Welly Zone Project is holding its final eventon 30th October from 10-12.30 at Hengistbury Head in Bournemouth. We will be searching for clues to the marine life living beneath the waves and there will be a free Welly Zone pack to collect so you can record your findings.

If you are interested in hearing some of the fascinating stories of Chesil Beach, there will be a walk along the Fleet lagoon with Don Moxom, the warden of the Chesil Bank and Fleet Nature Reserve on Sunday 27th October at 2.30pm. Meet at the Elm Tree Pub at Langton Herring and he will help you discover the wildlife of this internationally important site.

The popular half-term Bird Bonanza is also returning to the Chesil Centre from 29th – 31st October, where we are inviting people to find out about garden birds, the best things to feed them and how to make gardens bird-friendly for the winter. There will also be fun activities for the kids (from 50p per item) such as making fat balls, bird houses and bird feeders.  Bird food will be available in the shop and the Taste* café has some tantalising treats to refresh you during your day out at Chesil!

Scavenger hunt at Lorton Friday 1stNovember at 10:30-12:30, £2 per child. No unaccompanied children. Booking essential on 01305 816546 at Lorton Meadows, Upwey, DT3 5QH.

Free Welly Zone event Wednesday 30th October 10:00 – 12:30 meet at Hengistbury Head nature reserve (www.hengistburyhead.org) No unaccompanied children. The Fine Foundation Marine Centre at Kimmeridge will be open 12-4pm every day except Monday when it is closed. West Fleet Walk with the Warden – Sunday 27th October at 2:30pm. Adults £3, Children £2. Meet at the Elm Tree Pub, Langton Herring. No unaccompanied children.
