Some nine months ago my mother was coming home along Church St in her car. She heard a car roaring before it came around the bend. The police said by the skid mark measurements they were doing some 70 miles an hour. They saw my mum and breaked hitting her and wedging themselves between her crumpled car and the wall, knocking down an enormous street lamp ( narrowly missing my mother). Three lads jumped out their car and hot footed it away. Leaving my mum – 84 at the time trapped in her car. Luckily people came out of the houses, called for the ambulance and the police. They got my mum out of her written off car.

She seemed unscathed. However, mentally and physically she has declined over the weeks and months. She now used a stick at all times. Doesn’t like driving. And has suffered with obsessional thinking about the incident. The young man was known to the police but the air bag DNA was not enough. They could not prove who was driving. Even though the police knew the owner who had a history of car crime. My mum is devastated they got off, she was advised there would be a trial but the police backed down saying there was little they could do. My mum had been prepared by the police and victim support with umpteen visits and interviews for a court appearance – but it was not to be. This left her feeling empty and unserved by the system. Even the insurance company has made it as hard as possible for her. It is abysmal.

Any advice?
