I had a really disturbing encounter in the pub last night. I feel as if I need to get it off my chest and just put it out.
I met the most beautiful stunning woman, you know the type every male eye in the pub on her. Why she decided to have a conversation with me I have no idea. She decided to impress me by telling me about her military job where she started right at the bottom and worked her way right up to the top and is now a commander. She disclosed that her current job is controlling remote control submarines and that sometimes she even gets to kill. Horror clearly written all over my face I said “You kill people, remotely, by remote control? ” I genuinely couldn’t believe what I was being told. “No” she says “not people assets”. I was confused at this stage “What are assets in your world?” “Assets like land.” “How do you kill land without killing people?” At this stage my very helpful male friend chimes in “Things like railway stations”. “How do you kill railway stations without killing the people that work there and use them?” ” Well I know my jobs not for everyone but it’s the reason we are all here in the pub”.
At this stage I was beyond speech I was just left with my mouth hanging open and I walked away but I can’t get this conversation out of my head. The most beautiful and popular person in that room went on to boast to everybody she could that she was a serial state murderer and nobody seemed to mind as long as they thought they could get into her pants maybe… I don’t believe in taking life but even I thought if I were to take one life how many could I save.. I’d certainly lose my soul….
It’s funny how a small conversation in a pub can bring on an existential crisis and leave you doubting everything you believe in.
