While reincarnation isn’t believed in by all Buddhists, it’s a harmless enough widely held misconception. Buddhists, however, could not welcome current Home Secretary Suella Braverman to their number. Ultimately, the shared understanding of the belief is that you harm no one; even if she were on the left of the Conservative Party she’d struggle with such a belief system.

Sadly, we lack memories of our previous lives, but said memory of being a foul, right-wing bigot in such a situation may help in making her improve the world in that lifetime to come. I have personal experience of this – I was born a middle class, Tory-voting right-wing brat. Still within my lifetime, I had the privilege of having a serious breakdown, falling into extremely hard times and clawing my way from literally deciding not to jump off a suspension bridge into the epiphany that socialism is the only way forward. I’d recommend such an experience to anyone advocating ‘tough love’ to those beneath them in society; it makes you a better person.
