If we held a minute’s silence for every person who has died with Covid

When Boris Johnson announced that he was going to show the rest of the world a thing or two with his ‘Superman of Capitalism’ strategy of allowing the virus to spread through the UK population, he was effectively announcing a policy of social murder.

He was going to deliberately kill off a percentage of the UK population in order to appease the God of market forces with blood sacrifices.

Compare the UK’s horrific death rate a year later with countries that pursued effective Zero Covid strategies (New Zealand, Taiwan, Vietnam …), and we get an idea of how many unnecessary deaths this depraved Tory policy of social murder has delivered.

Then you look at the economic impact, and it turns out that Johnson’s basic assumption was absolutely wrong too, because the countries that took effective containment measures have suffered far less economic damage than countries like Britain where the government decided to deliberately allow the virus to spread through the population.

Johnson’s immediate instinct at the beginning of the crisis was to commit social murder in order to save the economy, inspired by the grotesque “profit above people” ideology that Tories adhere to, but it turns out that protecting the people who live in the economy from harm is not just the humane approach, it’s the economically literate one too.

In virtually any other country on earth Boris Johnson would have either resigned in disgrace over this deadly miscalculation, or he would have been forced from office by a tsunami of absolute outrage.

But we’re apparently such a spineless bunch of subservient bootlickers these days that we allow our leaders to needlessly kill over a hundred thousand of us, and ruin the economy in the process, then blather on pathetically about how he’s “doing his best”, as if he’s a six year old child being rubbish at football, rather than demonstrably one of the most malicious and incompetent national leaders on earth.
