Research by the University of Sheffield suggests that “less than 6% of the UK is urban”, using data from 2012.
5.3% of the UK land surface is ‘discontinuous urban fabric’, according to the research—these include areas like suburbs around cities, rural towns and built up areas with lots of gardens, parks and planted areas. Around 0.1% was ‘continuous urban fabric’—areas with buildings and roads covering more than 80% of land surface.
That would mean that 94% of UK land isn’t urban. Analysis of the report by the BBC suggested that 5.9% of the UK is built on and another 2.5% is “green urban”—including parks, cemeteries and private estates. That would suggest around 92% of the UK isn’t built on or urban.
In addition to only one percent (housing itself, including gardens etc = approximately 5%, but you get the point) of the UK being used for housing (2% for golf courses. Yes, really. Check yourself), the UK is far from ‘full’, has basically no means for almost all asylum seekers and refugees to claim asylum UNLESS they get to the U.K. (unless you are from Ukraine-not a pop at Ukrainians to be clear!) and FFS – NO, REFUGEES & ASYLUM SEEKERS DO NOT HAVE TO STAY IN FIRST COUNTRY/‘SAFE COUNTRY’ THEY REACH. THAT IS NOT THE LAW DESPITE WHAT THE MEDIA TELL YOU. If people do reach our shores, you can see just how they are treated. Like animals. At best!
Plus, WE HELPED CAUSE THE LITERAL REASON SOME OF THESE PEOPLE ARE ASYLUM SEEKERS AND REFUGEES IN THE FIRST PLACE! With our illegal wars, our selling of arms, our foreign policy, our colonialism and our imperialism. So, in some cases, we are saying to people “Yes, absolutely we destroyed your life, country and bombed your people…but you can f**k off if you want to come here!” Etc.
So, time to fight back against this overtly racist and xenophobic narrative.
