Weymouth and Portland Outdoor Adventure, construction and engineering students at Weymouth College have had a unique opportunity to restore a yacht, which was donated to the College in the last couple of months.
Previously, the yacht was sailed by Roger Cain whose wife donated it to the College, as she felt Roger would have wanted it to go to a home that would use it to promote sailing and encourage young people into activity.
The restoration of the yacht is a great opportunity for a wide range of students from different departments to engage with the project from beginning to end. The students have christened the yacht ‘Roger’ in memory of Mr Cain and as a dedication to him.
Outdoor Adventure Academy and NCS manager at the College, Alex Sergison said: “This generous donation will enable the students of Weymouth, and we hope people from the wider community, to enjoy the joys of sailing on this world-class coast line.”
Director of Construction and Engineering, Rex Witts, Chief Instructor Lee Kenney and Alex Sergison would like to give special thanks to Roger’s wife, Phill and Edd Gollop from the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy for their help and support with the yacht.
The construction and engineering students will be taking the yacht out on its maiden voyage since being handed over the College around Easter time; as a reward for the time and effort they have put into restoring the yacht. Other students within the College will also have an opportunity to sail in the summer.
Weymouth and Portland Outdoor Adventure offers a wide variety of activities from the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, such as kayaking, sailing, climbing, team building activities and canoeing to name but a few.
