Is boasting about less SEN pupils appropriate for a job advert?

A Stratford based educational consultancy has taken it upon itself to include within the narrative of a job advert for an English teacher the ‘boast’ that it has ‘lower’ than the National Average for pupils with Special Needs and free school meals!’ It then continues that the successful candidate will ‘share a belief that every young person can achieve, that every barrier to learning can be successfully removed through good teaching’. Therefore not only does it ‘boast’ of having fewer SEN and FSM pupils which we suspect is counter to the expectations of the Department for Education but it then counters the original boast by saying that the successful candidate must be equipped to help all students with barriers to learning. Which is it? And why make the boast in the first place?

When Dorset Eye contacted Nigel Horne, the senior consultant, on behalf of a reader who had contacted us about stating

…The suggestion that fewer children with special needs or from financially struggling families (attending the school) would be something to boast about is a very worrying one. Edustaff are not responding to my email. Wondered if anyone else wanted to write in.’

When contacted Mr denied that there was any issue and then launched an attack on parts of the teaching profession ‘In the mean time, why don’t you get a quote from your reader about the state of some so called experienced teachers who are deemed inadequate, but continue to go to work, knowing full well that they are not adding value to the students, but instead they continue to offer a poor education, whilst being more than happy to take home their pay – Also, ask your reader why he/she is going to strike over pay, which will be performance related, meaning inadequate teachers wont be offered the over inflated pay they currently get – surely your readers would be far more interested in this as a story, than an advert which seems to be a contradiction?’

Therefore it is now over to our readers to decide whether Mr Horne is right or whether these developments are inappropriate. Areas of concern are highlighted.
