Graeme Souness, born on May 6, 1953, in Edinburgh, Scotland, is a renowned former professional footballer and manager. Known for his combative style and leadership on the pitch, Souness had a distinguished playing career primarily with Liverpool, where he played from 1978 to 1984. During his time at Liverpool, he won five English league titles, three European Cups, and multiple domestic cups, establishing himself as one of the best midfielders of his era.

Souness began his career at Tottenham Hotspur but found fame at Middlesbrough, which led to his transfer to Liverpool. He later moved to Italian club Sampdoria before finishing his playing career at Rangers in Scotland.

Transitioning into management, Souness had stints at Rangers, leading them to several Scottish league titles, and at Liverpool, Galatasaray, Southampton, Torino, Benfica, Blackburn Rovers, and Newcastle United. His managerial career was marked by both successes and controversies.

Post-management, Souness has been a prominent football pundit, working with Sky Sports. His commentary style is often forthright and has sometimes sparked debates and controversies.

Souness has also been vocal about social issues, including racism in football. He has reflected on his past failures to challenge racist remarks and expressed a desire to be more proactive in combating discrimination.

Graeme Souness has, however, made several comments that have been construed as racist.

Erik Lamela Incident: During a match between Manchester United and Tottenham, Souness criticised Erik Lamela’s role in Anthony Martial’s sending off, making comments that were perceived as stereotyping Latin culture. His remarks led to an apology from Sky Sports for the offense caused by these stereotypes (TEAMtalk).

Paul Pogba Criticism: Souness has often criticised Paul Pogba, leading to accusations of racism. His repeated negative comments about Pogba’s attitude and professionalism, especially when compared to his comments on white players, have been seen by some as racially biased. Although Souness has defended himself by highlighting his past efforts to support Black teammates, the persistent focus on Pogba has raised concerns among fans and pundits (Evening Standard).

Reflection on Racism: Souness has admitted his past failures to challenge racist remarks in football. He expressed regret for not confronting racist comments made by football club directors, acknowledging that the Black Lives Matter movement has made him more aware of his responsibilities to stand against racism (The Independent).

Now listen to this and decide for yourselves. Does Mr Souness still have work to do on his attitude?
