Today, 25 June, the Climate Change Committee are releasing a report that states the Government is failing to meet its 2050 zero carbon target, a target that is already dangerously too late.
The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) is an independent, statutory body established under the Climate Change Act 2008. Its purpose is to advise the UK and devolved governments on emissions targets and to report to Parliament on progress made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for and adapting to the impacts of climate change.
To coincide with this, across the country, Extinction Rebellion supporters are delivering letters to their local MP.
Locally Extinction Rebellion, Dorchester, Weymouth and Portland will be personally delivering a letter to our South Dorset MP, Richard Drax. Urging him to take action to protect his constituents and asking him to tell them the truth.
The letter will be read out and live-streamed on the Extinction Rebellion Dorchester, Weymouth and Portland Facebook page and a photo and press release sent out after the action.
Meeting place: Chesil House, Dorset Innovation Park, Winfrith Newburgh, DT2 8ZB
Meeting time: 9am
The police know and will be present. This is a peaceful protest with the goal of empowering our leader to be bold and brave in the face of the greatest threat humanity has ever faced.
Letters will also be sent at 9am by email to Simon Hoare, MP for North Dorset, and Chris Loder, MP for West Dorset.

Extra information: About Extinction Rebellion
Time has almost entirely run out to address the ecological crisis which is upon us, including the 6th mass species extinction, global pollution, and abrupt, runaway climate change. Societal collapse and mass death are seen as inevitable by scientists and other credible voices, with human extinction also a possibility, if rapid action is not taken.
Extinction Rebellion believes it is a citizen’s duty to rebel, using peaceful civil disobedience, when faced with criminal inactivity by their Government.
Extinction Rebellion’s key demands are:
- Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change.
- Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
- Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
